Truck Fire Snags I-80 In New Lenox
NEW LENOX, Ill. (CBS) -- A semi-trailer truck caught fire on Interstate 80 overnight, causing a major traffic snare for the morning rush.
The truck's refrigerated trailer caught fire sometime before sunrise on westbound I-80 in New Lenox, reports CBS 2's Kris Habermehl.
The fire had been out for some time by 6:30 a.m., but the trailer was still lying in the right lane, burned all the way down to its frame rails.
Crews succeeded in removing the cab from underneath the charred trailer, and as of 6:30 a.m., a Bobcat was scooping up the unidentified burned cargo inside and hauling it to dumpsters.
The truck fire reduced I-80 to two lanes from LaGrange Road to about a mile past Wolf Road. One of the right lanes had reopened by 6:30 a.m.
Further details of how the truck caught fire were not immediately available.
