Trick-Or-Treaters Trade In Candy For Gift Cards At Tinley Park Dentist's Office

(CBS) -- Last night, trick-or-treaters really earned their candy, considering the miserable weather. So, you might find it surprising that a lot of kids were giving their candy away today, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

All morning at Amazing Smiles Family Dental Care in Tinley Park kids were showing up with bags of candy to be traded for gift cards and other prizes, depending on the weight of the candy.

One boy brought in 10 pounds. One girl, when asked what she told her mother when she was informed where her candy was going said she told her, "I'll think about it."

Mom Ann Marie Mastro said it was a negotiation getting her three kids to trade in the candy. "At first," she said, "the answer was a big no."

But, she said, they settled on giving away 75 percent of the candy. One of her daughters said she just gave away some she didn't like.

Her kids also made cards to go with the candy, which is being given to Operation Care Package to be sent to soldiers serving overseas.

Doctor Robert Theis was looking at boxes filled with candy. He's been doing the candy swap for about 15 years, with some help from local businesses in Tinley Park near his office.

"I guess it's just a means to try to, not necessarily take away the fun of Halloween for the kids, because obviously the trick-or-treating is a lot of fun, but to trade them for something maybe a little less damaging to their dental health."
