Tribune RedEye To Drop Saturday Edition
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Effective at the beginning of next month, the Chicago Tribune will drop the Saturday edition of its free RedEye publication.
In a report on the subject in its main newspaper, the Tribune reported it plans to redirect its focus toward the online edition of its weekday RedEye.
The last Saturday edition of the RedEye will be delivered Sept. 3.
Crain's Chicago Business reports the RedEye has a weekend circulation of 100,000, compared to 900,000 during the week. It was only available by home delivery, unlike the weekday edition, which is distributed to honor boxes and handed out free at 'L' stops citywide, Crain's reported.
The advertising circular inserted in the paper will continue as a standalone publication, Crain's reported.
Cutting the print edition will mean a savings for production and distribution, as higher fuel costs increase expenses for delivery, Crain's reported.
The RedEye began in 2002, in an effort to draw younger consumers back into newspaper reading. It is known for its shorter and simpler versions of news stories, light-hearted columns, and entertainment, celebrity gossip and sports content.
Beginning around the same time as the RedEye, the Chicago Sun-Times began publishing a competing tabloid, the Red Streak, but discontinued the publication at the end of 2005.
