Travel Expected To Drop For Labor Day Weekend

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's summer's last fling but this year, one projection indicates fewer of us will be travelling for the Labor Day weekend.

As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, AAA predicts that in Illinois, 1.7 million people will be on the go next week, down 2.6 percent from 2010.

Of those, just over 69,000 will fly, down more than 2 percent from last year.

With gas prices up $1 per gallon since last Labor Day, a little over 1.5 million travelers will drive.

AAA attributes the decline in travel to the slumping economy, and recent cutbacks in discretionary spending by consumers.

Not only are gas prices up this year, but travelers also find hotel rates higher. But renting a car will cost about 7 percent less than last year.
