Train Accidents Down Statewide, But Not Chicago Area
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A new analysis shows that Chicago-area railroad crossings remain dangerous.
No Decline In Chicago Area Train Accidents
While collisions involving trains are trending down statewide, a study by the Daily Herald finds there's been no significant decrease in the Chicago area over the past five years.
From 2006 through 2011, there were 621 collisions involving trains and either pedestrians or vehicles.
A total of 253 people died and 267 were injured.
In the suburbs, Des Plaines logged the most accidents with Harvey, Blue Island, Naperville and Wheaton in the top five, according to figures from the Illinois Commerce Commission.
If that trend holds, it will translate into three people a month killed by trains next year in the Chicago area.
