Trailer Homes Destroyed By Fire In Antioch
ANTIOCH (CBS) -- Fire torched a mobile home park in far north suburban Antioch on Tuesday, causing substantial damage and ruining some summer fun.
CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports the fire started a few minutes after noon, inside a trailer at 26252 Heart O'Lakes Blvd. It spread to seven other homes.
Chopper 2 HD captured the scene from the air just after firefighters brought the blaze under control around 1 p.m. at the Grass Lake Marina and RV Park in Antioch.
"The heat was very intense," said Dan Knowles, who lived in the trailer where the fire started.
He said it moved too quickly for him to save the family cat.
"I was cleaning up some stuff around the yard, and I smelled smoke," he said. "I ran inside to see if I could rescue the cat, but by then it was just too late."
Ann Murgatroyd said, "I don't know how it happened. I was gone for two hours, and I don't know what happened. All I know is that I lost my baby."
No residents were hurt in the fire, but three mobile homes were destroyed, and five others were damaged – their siding melted by the heat of the flames.
A brand new boat was also a total loss, after just four hours in the water.
Antioch Fire Chief John Nixon said one propane tank managed to survive the fire, but two others did not.
"They were releasing their gas and they were like a large fire candle," he said.
Antioch fire officials said they don't know the cause of the fire yet, but there doesn't appear to be anything suspicious.
It took about 18,000 gallons of water to put it out.
