Tornado Confirmed In Rogers Park; Community Cleanup Underway
CHICAGO (CBS)-- A brief tornado touched down in Rogers Park during Monday's storm, the National Weather Service confirmed.
The tornado became waterspout as it moved east to Lake Michigan.
Tornado warnings were issued Monday for much of Cook County, as well as northern Lake and northeastern McHenry counties; Kane, Kendall, and DuPage counties; parts of Will County at various points.
CBS 2's Marissa Parra visited Jarvis Square in Rogers Park where the tornado touched down and left extensive damage. She said cars are still trapped under trees and other debris downed in the storm.
Residents described the sounds of objects flying off balconies and trees crashing down. One resident said he ran for shelter.
Warning sirens went off in some parts of the city. A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect throughout the area during the afternoon.
Monday night's storms left many Chicagoans with storm damage to clear on Tuesday. High winds that reached 100 miles per hour caused damage across the Chicago area and suburbs.
Tuesday morning, community groups joined together to help clean up areas destroyed by the tornado in Rogers Park.
"I don't care what side of the city you're on... what color, gender or religion... our volunteers are going to show up to help out," Jahmal Cole from My Block, My Hood, My City said.
