Topinka, Simon Unveil Separate Taxpayer Transparency Programs
(CBS) -- In a case of dueling transparency, both the comptroller and her challenger introduced new programs to let taxpayers know where their money is and where it's going, reports WBBM's John Cody.
"I can't make the tax situation any better. I mean, you all and the public are still going to have to pay, but I think that we can make it a little less painful," said State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka.
Topinka says her back office people have figured how you can provide your contact information and get an email or text back about progress of your state tax payment through her system so you'll be better able to judge your tax refund date if there is one.

In the same vein, her challenger, current Lt. Governor Sheila Simon, says the state will begin issuing receipts so taxpayers will know exactly where their state tax dollars are being spent.
