Top City Colleges Official Fired For Lying On Application

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A top-level official with the Chicago City Colleges has been fired, just weeks after he was hired, for lying on his application.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bob Conway reports, Crain's Chicago Business says James Hartung was hired as a $100,000 per year dean of careers at Olive-Harvey College in June.

But on Thursday, City College officials released saying Hartung was out, and Crain's reports the reason was that he lied during the application process.

Specifically, Crain's reports, Hartung said he had retired from his previous job at the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority in Toledo, Ohio.

In point of fact, Hartung had been fired from the Toledo job for reportedly having a personal relationship with a female employee who worked for him as a lobbyist, Crain's reported.

Four years ago, Hartung was the subject of a series of reports about the relationship in the Toledo Blade. the reports detailed e-ails saying the woman pressured Hartung to raise her monthly fee from $8,000 ultimately to $10,000, and hoe he worked to satisfy her, Crain's reported.

Crain's quotes City Colleges officials as saying a review is underway into the systems vetting process.
