Top-50 Free Agent List: Where Do Tillman And Melton Fit Best?
(CBS) Free agency is just a couple weeks away, at which point there will be many decisions to make for the Bears and every other team across the NFL.
Before we get there, though, it's good to know who everyone should be looking at. To that end, MMQB.com writer Greg Bedard compiled an informative, comprehensive list of the top free agents, 100 through 1. Today was the release of 50 through 1, and it's worth a look for you NFL junkies.
Bedard's top-ranked free agent was Carolina edge rusher Greg Hardy, who most expect to re-sign with the Panthers. Seattle's Michael Bennett, brother of Bears tight end Martellus, was No. 3 on the list. Bedard believes Jacksonville is the best fit for Michael Bennett.
As for the Bears, they have two free agents in the top 50: cornerback Charles Tillman at No. 47 and defensive tackle Henry Melton at No. 36. Here's what Bedard wrote of each.
On Tillman:
The NFL's reigning Man of the Year for his off-field efforts is known for being tough. Even at his age (33), teams always are looking to add players like that. Best fit: Bears. Things are shaky in that secondary, but Lovie Smith could make a play in Tampa.
On Melton:
Was starting to become a dominating presence on the interior when he was tagged in '13, but he tore his ACL in Week 3 and was arrested after a bar fight in December. Look for a one-year deal. Best fit: Bears. They need help inside and know what they have in Melton.
