Toews Brothers Take Ice Together For Blackhawks
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (CBS) -- The Chicago Blackhawks acquired David Toews, the 21-year-old younger brother of team captain and NHL superstar Jonathan two weeks ago.
As CBS 2's Megan Mawicke reports, the brothers had countless basement battles while honing their hockey skills and they always dreamed of playing on the same team in the NHL some day. It will happen for the first time this week when both suit up for the Blackhawks in the preseason.
Obviously we've skated a lot together on outdoor rink and practiced in the basement together but the only time we played together when I was 4 and he was 6," says David Toews.
"We're very close and we spent a lot of time together skating and training and getting ready for this. The number one thing is our family has always been passionate about hockey so it's good to see him get a chance," says Jonathan Toews.
David Toews couldn't believe his good fortune when he was traded from the New York Islanders to the Blackhawks.
Now he's trying to get all the advice he can from his older brother so he sticks with the team.
"All the success he's had he sees the things I need to work on. It's better with him telling me little things I need to get better because sometimes I don't know the questions to ask," says David Toews.
"We always talk hockey. Sometimes I am a little hard on him but for the most part he's hungry and determined and he wants to become better, but he wants to find his own way," adds Jonathan Toews.
The Toews brothers are serious about hockey, but they can also give each other a little playful ribbing especially when it comes to being roommates.
David is camping out at Jonathan's house here in Chicago while he's trying to make the team. As for who's the messier brother, Jonathan says it's his brother.
"I have to get on him sometimes. It's frustrating, but we're doing better now," adds Jonathan with a grin.
David says his older brother doesn't realize that he's the one always cleaning up.
"I'm always walking behind him with a broom," says David.
But David hopes he isn't always walking in his brother's shadow. This is his chance to make his own mark, not just as Jonathan Toews' younger brother.
