Tightened Security Continues After Bin Laden's Death
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago continues to step up security measures in the wake of Osama bin Laden's death.
As CBS 2's Susanna Song reports, train systems are now being subjected to heightened security along with the city's airports.
On Tuesday morning, expect to see many more police officers in uniform at CTA 'L' stops and Metra stations.
"We're taking some action that is behind the scenes that the commuters would never notice, and we're taking action that is upfront, and an increased show of police presence is something our commuters will likely see," said Metra spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet.
Meanwhile, the city Office of Emergency Management and Communications has ordered personnel to remain vigilant and monitor the city's surveillance camera network. All the city's police officers have been ordered to be uniform when on duty, and personnel with the Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Department of Aviation have also been ordered to remain vigilant.
Also, before the Bulls game at the United Center Monday night, security was added – including guards using hand-operated metal detectors or wands at the gates. Fans were told to come early.
At O'Hare International Airport, travelers found themselves standing in longer Transportation Security Administration lines.
"I'm OK," said Colleen Jones, who was traveling to Barbados. "A little tense but OK ... anything to keep me safe and to get to our destination."
Meanwhile, the Chicago Jewish Federation says synagogues and other Jewish institutions have also been urged to update security procedures.
Right now, there have been no specific threats to Chicago, but OEMC is asking everyone to keep their eyes open for any suspicious activities and to call 911 to report it.
