Tiger Woods' 5 Worst Finishes In A Major
(CBS) Tiger Woods fired a three-over 74 on Thursday in the opening round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla, trailing far behind early co-leaders Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell, who each fired six-under 65s.
As of late Thursday afternoon, Woods was tied for 120th. Only the top 70 places, plus ties, advance to the weekend, putting him in danger of missing the cut.
Here's a look at Woods' worst career finishes in a major as a pro.
2003 PGA Championship -- tie for 39th
After winning two majors in 2002, Woods soon began working on swing changes in an effort to reduce strain on his left knee. It resulted in a two-year stretch without winning a major, including this showing at Oak Hill in which he didn't shoot post a score better than a 72 in four rounds and finished 16 shots behind winner Shaun Micheel.
2006 U.S. Open -- cut
Woods posted a 76 in each of his first two rounds, and his 12-over wasn't close to being good enough to make the weekend. Winged Foot was certainly a brutal test -- winner Geoff Ogilvy finished at five-over -- but this was perhaps the most surprising result of Woods' career, given that he was still healthy and in his prime. Perhaps his father's death a month earlier played a role in his mental focus. He would respond by winning the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, then follow that up with second-place finishes at the next year's Masters and U.S. Open.
2009 British Open -- cut
Woods shot a 71 in the first round but missed the cut by a stroke after following with a 74 at Turnberry. Two double-bogeys on the back nine of the second round did him in. "It's disappointing, there's no doubt," Woods said then.
2011 PGA Championship -- cut
Woods had little chance of making the cut after opening with a 77, then followed with a 73 to miss the cut by six shots. "I was in, what, 20 bunkers in two days?" Woods said.
2013 PGA Championship -- tie for 40th
As winner Jason Dufner and the contenders posted at least one round in the mid-60s, Woods never could throw up a low number, going 71-70-73-70 at Oak Hill. He finished at four-over, 14 shots off the winning score.
