Thunderstorms Bring Tornado Warning, Lightning Damage
(CBS) -- Thunderstorms dumped plenty of rain on the Chicago area overnight, leading to a tornado warning in McHenry County when a funnel cloud was spotted. Lightning also sparked at least one fire in Crystal Lake.
CBS 2's Susanna Song reports the worst of the storm was over before dawn, though more rain was likely Monday evening, after a hot and muggy afternoon.
The storms overnight prompted a tornado warning early Monday after a funnel cloud was spotted around 2:15 a.m. Several trees were damaged by wind, but there was no confirmation that a tornado touched down.
Around 3 a.m., the Crystal Lake Fire Department responded to a fire in the attic of a two-story home at 4016 Ned Drive.
"I heard a loud, thunderous boom; shook the whole house. Then about another five minutes later, it smelled like candles were burning. Came outside, looked at the house and saw the tip of the house was on fire," homeowner Scott Debates said.
Extra crews were brought in, as the house was located in an area not served by fire hydrants. Crews had the fire under control by 3:45 a.m.
Officials said the fire was the apparent result of a lightning strike, due to a large hole in the peak of the roof. No injuries were reported, but the house was deemed uninhabitable.
One storm cell in Woodstock dumped 2.1 inches of rain overnight. Rockford also reported 2.0 inches of rain.
