Three Killed In Separate West Side Shootings
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Three people -- including a 15-year-old boy -- were fatally shot Monday afternoon on the West Side, police said.
The murders come after a holiday weekend where two-dozen people were shot in nearby areas on the West Side.
The most recent outbreak of violence started about 3:20 p.m. when a 20-year-old man was shot to death in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, authorities said.
The man, 20-year-old Marquise Chandler, was sitting in a van parked in a gas station at South Pulaski Road and West Congress Parkway when another vehicle approached and somebody inside fired shots into the van, authorities said.
Chandler, of the 4000 block of West Lexington Street, was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Less than two miles north, 15-year-old Ed Cooper was shot dead about 5:05 p.m. in the 600 block of North Lawndale Avenue, police said.
Police responding to a call of a person shot found Cooper mortally wounded from a gunshot wound to the chest, police said. Cooper, of the 1200 block of South Kostner Avenue, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died a few minutes later, according to the medical examiner's office.
About 15 minutes later, 30-year-old Georgina Randell was shot to death near her North Lawndale neighborhood home, authorities said. Police said they believe the shooting stems from a domestic dispute.
Randell was shot multiple times about 5:20 p.m. in the 1600 block of South Drake Avenue, authorities said. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she died at 5:44 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
After the shooting, the male suspected of killing Randell barricaded himself in a home on the block, but surrendered without incident about 10:40 p.m. Monday, police said. Charges against him are pending.
The killings come after an especially violent holiday weekend on the West Side, where two men were shot dead and 22 others wounded in 8.5-square-mile area near the Garfield Park and Austin neighborhoods. Sources said an ongoing gang conflict was responsible for some of the attacks.
