Three Gary Men Charged With Hammond Man's Murder
HAMMOND, Ind. (STMW) -- Three Gary men face murder charges after shooting a man in the head during a drug-related robbery on Dec. 17 in Hammond.
Marvel Harper Jr., 22, Dontrel Hughes, 19, and Marcus Flanagan, 18, were charged with murder and murder in perpetration of a robbery.
Around 12:26 a.m., Hammond Police found David Alexander Jr., on the ground — between two cars — unconscious and still breathing after a shooting near Alice Avenue and Carroll Street.
According to court records, police found shell casings, a cell phone, a gun, a magazine, blood stains and a small bag with a white rock substance in the street. Alexander died from three gunshots to the head.
Police traced a phone number that called Alexander's phone shortly before the shooting to a person who lived on Alice Avenue. The resident said her son knew the men and asked her to pick them up to make some money. They wanted to buy drugs, so she called Alexander to purchase cocaine from him. She did not have enough money, so she called one of the men over to her car and he got in. She got out of the car, but one of the men she picked up ordered her to get back in the car.
The three men started to beat Alexander. She went inside the house and heard several gunshots. She drove the suspects to a house in the 4700 block of Oak Street.
A witness told police that Alexander got out of the car and ran down Carroll Street before Flanagan shot him five times.
Marvel had a gun in his hoodie and he gave it to an acquaintance, telling him it was a "hot" gun.
