Threat Of Cheese Laced With Nails At Local Dog Parks Deemed Bogus

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago area dog owners are being warned about a new danger at dog parks, but the threat appears to be bogus.

As WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports, the posting says, "New trend at dog parks, nails in pieces of cheese, if you take your dogs to dog parks, be careful."

It is accompanied by a fairly disturbing photo showing a person's palm filled with a dozen cubes of cheese, all embedded with what appear to be roofing nails.

The Urban Legends Reference Web site Snopes.com reports people claimed to have received notices about nails embedded in cheese at dog parks in Chicago, as well as Massachusetts.

The picture is real, but the threat, as best we can tell, is not.

Snopes reports the picture came from a July news story from Buenos Aires, Argentina, in which a dog walker saw the cheese with nails on the floor of a kennel. No animals were harmed, Snopes reported.

But there are no reports of cheese with nails at dog parks in Chicago, or Massachusetts. Reports that water bowls and dog parks were being spiked with antifreeze in Augusta, Maine, are also bogus, Snopes reports.
