Third Person Dies After Head-On Crash
LYONS, Ill. (STMW) -- A third person has died from an early Sunday head-on crash apparently caused by a driver going the wrong direction in west suburban Lyons.
Liliana Calzada, 38, of the 7900 block of S. Kirkland Ave., was involved in an early Sunday crash on Illinois Route 171 at West 47th Street and was pronounced dead at 2:20 p.m. at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Paramedics got to the scene at 2:33 a.m. Sunday and found a Honda CRV carrying a family of four and a Buick Park Avenue with one male occupant that had crashed, Lyons Fire Dept. Chief Gordon Nord said.
Shortly before the head-on crash, police got a call that a vehicle was headed the wrong way on Illinois Route 171, police said. Officers were on their way to find that vehicle when they were notified of the crash.
Two people were ejected during the collision on southbound Illinois Route 171 over 47th Street, according to a police release.
All five people were initially taken in serious condition to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Nord said.
Two of the victims -- Damien Colzada, 7, of the 7900 block of S. Kirkland Ave., and Herrington Jameson, 43, of the 1700 block of Brookfield Rd. in Naperville -- were pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
A Monday autopsy determined Damien Calzada and Jameson died of multiple injuries from an automobile striking a van and the deaths were ruled accidents, the medical examiner's office said. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday on Liliana Calzada.
There were two males and two females inside the SUV, two of whom were "younger," Nord said.
"We found two people on the ground ejected and two still pinned in one vehicle and one person pinned inside the other one,'' Nord said.
Several pieces of rescue equipment, including two cutters and two rescue tools, were brought to the scene. No fire occurred but the crash caused "substantial fluids," such as antifreeze and oil, to spill over the roadway.
