Thieves Steal Packages From Albany Park Condo Building At Least Three Times
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A group of Northwest Side residents was fed up and frustrated, after mail thieves struck their condo building at least three times. Now they're hoping security footage helps catch the culprits.
The crooks were calm, careful, and prepared as they walked into the lobby of an Albany Park condo building. As surveillance camera footage showed, one miscreant checked the stairwell, while the other took out a large cloth bag, and filled it with packages left for residents.
"I couldn't believe it. I mean, it is blatant," said Nikki Grieco, one of the victims.
She saw packages she was expecting in the lobby last week, but had her hands full, so she left them there while she went to her condo. When she went back down to get them, they were gone.
What's worse, the thieves have done this before, Grieco said.
"They have obviously had their eye on the building for a while, and this isn't the first time it has happened," she said. "To the best of my knowledge … this would be the third."
Grieco said she and others who live in the building weren't sure how the suspects have gotten into the locked lobby. Building management sent out a notice about the crime, telling residents police have been notified. She said management has tried to enhance security, but thieves keep getting in.
"It's not just us. There seems to be things going on down the neighborhood. I've been talking to other neighbors, and they've been missing things, too," she said.
Chicago Police said they have no report about the thefts on file, so they can't comment on this case, or say if it's part of a pattern in the neighborhood.
The management offices were closed on Sunday, so no one there was available for comment.
