Thieves Lifting Drain Covers In Arlington Heights

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (STMW) - Some enterprising -- and apparently strong -- thieves have struck the streets of one northwest suburb in recent weeks.

In a two-week period from Oct. 5-19, thieves have made off with eight storm drain covers -- each weighing about 100 pounds, according to police in Arlington Heights.

The iron, circular "honeycomb-style" covers were taken from roadside curb receptacles, a release from police said.

The grates are valued at $100 apiece and have no unique markings to identify them as village property.

"They're very heavy and it would take some effort to remove them," Officer Doug Hajek said. Police believe the covers have been stolen because of the value of the metal, he said.

Thefts have occurred during the late evening or overnight hours from the 100 block of Appletree, Burning Tree at Burr Oak (2), the 500 block of East Hackberry, 200 block of East Tanglewood, 900 block of West Berkley, and Berkley at Patton (2).

Police advise residents to report suspicious activity by calling 911 immediately, but not to try and intervene in a crime. Reports can be made anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at (847) 590-7867 or emailing crimestoppers@vah.com.
