The Greater Food Depository Makes More Than 70 Deliveries Ahead Of Thanksgiving
CHICAGO (CBS) -- As Chicagoans prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Greater Chicago Food Depository is making sure those in need have the ingredients for the big feast.
The Greater Food Depository dropped off Saturday about 600 turkeys at the Beautiful Zion Baptist Church in Englewood, where the line went around the block, said spokesman Paul Morello.
The church was one of roughly 70 food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens that received deliveries ahead of the holiday. WBBM's Nancy Harty reports.
In addition to a turkey, chicken or ham, people in need received potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and corn.
Morello said about one-in-six, or about 812,000 people living in Cook County turn to the food depository's network for help at some point during the year.
That means the need remains after the holiday.
To help with that need, Morello said they have about 500 organizations hosting food drives in the next two months.
