The Draft May Dictate What Bears Target
With less than a month until the NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears are still evaluating prospects, and players on their roster, to find the best draft day strategy.
"I think it depends on how the draft falls," Dan Pompei, of the Chicago Tribune, said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "If you're drafting as late in the first round as the Bears are, you really have to be flexible and open to accepting what the draft gives you."
The Bears' most glaring need comes on the offensive line, but while there is good talent available, there is also a high demand for these players.
"I think this draft really has four, high-quality offensive tackles, and one high-quality interior offensive lineman," Pompei said. "And I think there's an outstanding chance that all five of those players are gone when the Bears are picking. So now you say what's on the other side of the ball? The strength, maybe, in that range of the draft might be defensive end, given the Bears' needs. So that's the way to go. Maybe it's a linebacker. Maybe it's a player at another position you're not even talking about."

Whatever the Bears decide to do, they likely won't be too locked into a specific player or position.
"You really make a mistake if you prioritize need over the strength of the draft," Pompei said. "Because that's how you end up with a lot of player who aren't quite good enough."
