The Bernstein Brief: Mystery Lies Underground In Wrigley Field Renovation
By Dan Bernstein-

(CBS) Taking the long view on their Wrigley Field construction project as they did on the baseball rebuild, Cubs management is generally unfazed by the current delays.
They're forging ahead with grand plans, having steamrolled the barking rooftop owners and pushed through governmental red tape and political posturing to actually get to the concrete and steel. There are no guarantees of timetables with work on this scale, only estimates and hope. But they know once started, it's going to get done, well aware of any potential hiccups and complaints that come with it along the way.
But even this is mostly exterior work, compared to the mystery that lies ahead. After this season, they are scheduled to begin the next phase -- digging up streets and the park to make room for a 30,000-foot underground clubhouse facility. Even with all of the proper testing and preparation, this could end up like an archeological site, as it's impossible to know what's actually under there, until you find out.
The unknows involved at this time next year could have the Cubs looking back fondly at mere setbacks in getting bleacher seats completed.
