The Bernstein Brief: Mediocrity Reigns At Illinois
By Dan Bernstein-
(CBS) Illinois football had made its statement to you: Mediocrity is the goal, so consider it achieved.
Mostly empty stands are fine, as is the lifleless pregame parking lot. No need for any real excitement or expectations that come with a program fighting for conference titles and national stature, because those times are over for the forseeable future.
An equal number of wins and losses punches that coveted ticket to some sorry bowl game at the bottom of the list, but that's plenty good enough now. There will be no futile, embarrassing search for some expensive coaching hire, because there's no point to it anymore. No real resources either, with fundraising down notably.
Tim Beckman isn't going anywhere after a 6-6 season, which tells you all you need to know about the moribund state of Illinois' once-proud football program.
This all that's left. It appears that's OK.
