The Bernstein Brief: Low Bar Set For Bears Against Patriots

By Dan Bernstein--
CBSChicago.com senior columnist

(CBS) The outcome doesn't matter, but the quality of performance does, a little.

Being as unmitigatedly awful as the Bears were in their first practice game against the Broncos -- a 22-0 loss last week -- now affords them the luxury of just having to not be that against the Patriots on Thursday night.

After three days of practice in Foxboro, just looking merely competent at anything when playing the Patriots will constitute a positive step. Make a block, tackle a ball-carrier, catch a pass or fall on a loose ball.

At least prove Bears coach John Fox right about his ability to "clean things up" and "make corrections."

It's only mid-August, so we don't ask much. It will be enough to not again have rage-quit an exhibition game after a half hour, so if the TV is still on at the end of the first quarter, we'll call it a win.
