The Bernstein Brief: Cubs' New Digs To Test Joe Maddon's Philosophy
By Dan Bernstein--

(CBS) Joe Maddon has something new to manage, and it's not a player.
This is the guy who urges his teams to avoid getting to the park too early, remember, lest they spend too many wasted hours "in a concrete bunker, drinking coffee and watching TV." He wants them to live their lives outside of baseball, not just in the clubhouse.
But this new thing underground next to Wrigley Field is a sports bar, day spa, fitness club, party venue, game arcade and private restaurant that also happens to have their locker room in it. This doesn't exactly disincentivize early arrival, instead creating an idealized man-child heaven.
A bunker this is not, and it's a likely choice as an alternative to houses with screaming babies or lists of errands and household chores. Any of us would be there in a hurry, too.
Maddon is going to have to reconsider on this one.
