The Bernstein Brief: 'Catch Committee' Is Just So NFL

(CBS) They will gather for discussion and debate, six members appointed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to study a problem for our times critical enough to merit the special formation of this high-level committee: determining what a catch is.
Former GM Bill Polian; former coaches Joe Philbin, Ken Whisenhunt and Jim Schwartz; former receiver James Thrash; and officials' instructor Tom Finken will answer the call to serve, aided NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino. Input will be solicited from others as well, possibly including the excited Dez Bryant, who thinks the idea of forming the emergency task force is "cool."
They will review the current rule, the history of the rules and 20 years worth of game tape.
And here's betting that whatever is decided and later adopted by the competition committee ultimately results in a new round of unintended unfairness and confusion as soon as the first exhibition games next summer.
Only in this league.
