The 5 Best Foursomes At The Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Bryan Altman, CBS Local Sports

It seems as though the universal offseason activity for athletes from any sport is golf - and some of them are pretty good at it too (See: Tony Romo, who has tried many times to qualify for the U.S. Open in the offseason). The annual Pro-Am at Pebble Beach golf course in Pebble Beach, California brings out a wide variety of athletes and celebrities who play with professional golfers for the weekend. Needless to say, when you mix them all together and put them on one of the world's finest golf courses you get some fantastic results. Here are five of the most interesting foursomes you'll see at Pebble Beach this coming weekend.

1. Jordan Spieth (Pro)

Jake Owen (Country Star)

Dustin Johnson (Pro and son in law of...)

Wayne Gretzky (Greatest hockey player of all time).

This has to be the front-runner for superstar foursome of the weekend. Not only is Dustin Johnson returning to the golf course after a highly publicized break from the game, but he's doing so alongside his father-in-law. Then you throw in one of the best young pros in the game in Spieth and you have one heck of a group. So that leaves Jake Owen, who apparently is a 3.4 handicap on the golf course (that's really good). Hopefully he doesn't outshine The Great One and the potentially rusty Dustin Johnson too badly.

2. Nick Watney (Pro)

Buster Posey (MLB Player)

Jim Furyk (Pro)

Huey Lewis (Singer)

You have Buster Posey, arguably the best catcher in baseball, the No. 6 ranked golfer in the world in Jim Furyk, and then there's Huey Lewis. It may be "Hip To Be Square," but being square isn't anything this foursome has to worry about.

3. Steven Bowditch (Pro)

Larry The Cable Guy (Comedian)

Billy Horschel (Pro)

Colt Ford (Country Singer/Golfer)

I don't care who you are, if you're in a group with Larry The Cable Guy, it's going to be funny. Especially considering that a quick Google search has revealed that Larry The Cable Guy might be more competent at installing your cable than getting a golf ball in a hole. Then you have Billy Horschel, the antithesis of Larry, who won the Fed Ex Cup last year and a cool $10 million dollars along with it.

How about Colt Ford? Who is Colt Ford you ask? Well, Ford was once a professional golfer on the Nationwide tour but decided to put down his golf clubs and begin a successful country music career. With a name like Colt Ford, country music might have been the right choice. What are the odds that Colt Ford shoots the low round out of this foursome and then writes a Platinum song about it?

4. John Daly (Pro)

Herman Edwards (Coach/ESPN)

Tommy Gainey (Pro)

Geoff Couch (??)

If the first two names on that list aren't raising all sorts of questions in your mind let me open Pandora's box for you. John Daly, one of the most enigmatic and all-around unpredictable characters in sports history teamed up with the ultra-orthodox, heart and soul coach and former player Herman Edwards. This truly feels like the battle between good and evil. Will Daly's lackadaisical attitude fly with Edwards' in your face motivation tactics? I for one can't wait to find out. Personally, I'm expecting to see a reenactment of a certain scene from Happy Gilmore. You know the one...

5. D.A. Points (Pro)

Bill Murray (Actor/Comedian/Living Legend)

Dicky Pride (Pro)

Craig Johnson (??)

I was tempted to leave this group off in favor of the foursome with Ray Romano and Andy Garcia but one Bill Murray is equal to those two combined, especially when we have moments like this one to look forward. The reason they're not ranked higher is because the rest of Murray's supporting cast isn't lighting up a marquee anywhere anytime soon. Murray's partner D.A. Points is a respected member of the PGA Tour and the two of them actually won the Pro-Am together in 2011, but Craig Johnson (profession unknown) and Dicky Pride aren't drawing a crowd.
