Thayer: Bennett Should Be Compensated

(WSCR) At the end of the 2011 season, Matt Forte's contract won't be the only thing on the mind of the Bears' front office.

Wide receiver Earl Bennett is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. Though he's missed five games this season,  he is easily Jay Cutler's favorite target, as the two teamed up together at Vanderbilt.

In his return from injury against the Eagles on Monday night, Bennett caught five passes for 95 yards, including a touchdown catch.

Former Bears lineman and current Bears radio color analyst Tom Thayer joined The Mully and Hanley Show on Friday to discuss what could take place in Bennett's contract negotiations.

"It comes down to every player," Thayer said. "If they're trying to make their mark in the NFL and break the bank, it's going to be difficult to get a deal done with anybody, just because Earl does have his limitations. He's not gonna put something down on the stopwatch that's going to be hard for everyone to believe in terms of a 4.1 (40-yard dash). His willingness to go in there and do the dirty work sometimes gets him to take some shots and stuff.

"There are limitations to Earl's negotiations, but if he's willing to be fair, then he should be as fairly compensated as anyone else out there."
