Thayer: Bears Should Start Grasu At Center
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Even though Bears rookie center Hroniss Grasu has yet to take a snap in a regular-season game, radio analyst Tom Thayer thinks he should get the start Sunday against the Chiefs.
Veteran center Will Montgomery is done for the season after breaking his leg last week. While left guard Matt Slauson took over for Montgomery against the Raiders, Thayer told WBBM Newsradio's Josh Liss he thinks Grasu should start against Kansas City, given what he saw from the rookie in training camp.
"He's the future of the center position here in Chicago," Thayer said. "If you have experience like Matt Slauson on one side, and Vlad Ducasse on the other side, at least you have a couple experienced players playing in between the rookie center."
With Arrowhead Stadium being a notoriously noisy arena for the visiting team, Thayer said the Bears must make sure the offense is in sync when they line up for the snap.
"It's always a great environment in Kansas City if you're the home team, because they bring a sea of red," Thayer said. "When you have a new center coming in, with a possibility of Hroniss Grasu playing the center position, you have to make sure you have an organized snap count at the line of scrimmage each and every play. It's not something that you can fall into a rhythm. You have to have the rhythm from snap one."
