Thayer: Bears Can't Neglect Run Game
(WSCR) When news broke the Bears had acquired Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall, it was easy for Bears fans to dream about an aerial assault we'd never before seen in Chicago.
The running game became an afterthought - but as one former Super Bowl champion believes, the Bears can't afford to leave the running game behind.
"I know I did, I think all of us did - we got so excited," Bears radio analyst Tom Thayer told The Mully and Hanley Show. "When they went and traded for Brandon Marshall, we imagined all the success of the future of the Bears is going to go through the air. So, let's all reorganize this thing, the fan base, the coaches the organization. The most successful route to the Super Bowl is still including the running game. I think if you go out there and start trying to throw the ball immediately, you're putting your team in a weaker spot than you do if you're running the ball successfully. You can build a game plan off the run."

While Thayer doesn't believe the Bears are good enough to defeat the elite in the NFL right now, he thinks they can get there this season.
"Are they good enough today? No," Thayer said. "Can they be good enough in six weeks? Yes. The passing game and everybody that's involved in the passing game, it takes a significant amount of time."
