Health Officials Offer Thanksgiving Safety Tips
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Thanksgiving means a time for food and gratitude, but public health officials say safety should be a top priority too.
The Illinois Department of Public Health is offering tips in handling food to avoid salmonella, listeria or E. coli.
The first tip is to make sure the turkey is fully thawed and cooked. Health officials say to thoroughly wash hands, utensils and surfaces that have come in contact with raw meat.
Also, if a turkey fryer is being used, be sure the turkey is completely thawed and be careful with marinades because water can cause oil to spill over and create a fire hazard.
Health officials say it's also important to immediately refrigerate leftovers to prevent bacteria from growing.
