Texas Man Charged With Killing Grandmother In East Dundee
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Texas man was awaiting extradition to Illinois, after he was charged with killing his grandmother in northwest suburban East Dundee last month.
WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports 41-year-old Rich Schmelzer was arrested by federal marshals Monday afternoon at his home in Frisco, Texas.
According to Kane County prosecutors, Schmelzer traveled to East Dundee last month and fatally stabbed his 85-year-old grandmother, Mildred "Dodie" Darrington, on July 18.
Darrington's hairdresser found her body later the same day, when she visited Darrington's home in the 100 block of Aldis Drive to check on her after she failed to show up for her regular appointment.
The Kane County State's Attorney's office has not yet disclosed the alleged motive for the crime, but said Schmelzer used to live in Kane County.
An arrest warrant was issued for Schmelzer on Friday on first-degree murder charges. Federal marshals arrested him shortly before 4 p.m. Monday. The warrant carries a $5 million bond, prosecutors said.
Schmezler was being held at the Denton County Jail, pending extradition proceedings.
