Temperatures May Rise To Near 100 In Some Areas
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The beaches will soon be closing, the summer festivals are winding down, and parents are preparing to send their kids back to school.
But you wouldn't know it by stepping outside Thursday. The next two days would constitute sweltering heat even in mid-July.
CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros says highs will in the mid-90s across the area on Thursday and Friday, and some outlying areas – particularly to the south, could see temperatures close to 100 degrees.
A warm front hovering over the area is to blame for the thick, steamy heat and humidity that will make it unpleasant to walk.
The official forecast high for Thursday is 94 degrees. Overnight, the temperatures drop only to 77 and will remain close to 80 in some places.
On Friday, the forecast high is 95 – again with temperatures even higher in outlying areas. In addition to the heat Friday, expect roasting hot breezes gusting up to 25 mph.
But come Labor Day Monday, all of this will seem like a distant memory. A cold front that is now hovering over the western Plains states will arrive in the Chicago area on Saturday, bringing storms that could be severe.
Following that, the forecast high for Sunday is only 74 degrees with an overnight low of 57. By Monday, the high is a mere 70, with a low of 56.
