Teens Charged With Photocopying $20 Bill Over 35 Times, Buying Pot
CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (CBS) -- Two teenage boys from Crystal Lake are in big trouble, after allegedly making $700 worth of photocopies of a single $20 bill and using them to buy pot.
Neighbors Nicholas A. Cheney and Ryan Young, both 18, of the 800 block of Boxwood Drive in Crystal Lake, were arrested on Wednesday by McHenry County Sheriff's police. The arrests following a tip received by Crime Stoppers of McHenry County, a release from the sheriff's office said.
Cheney and Young placed a $20 bill in a home scanner and made more than $700 worth of identical copies of the bill.
A police news release did not indicate what kind of paper the young men used for the more than 35 photocopies, nor whether they realized the photocopied bills would all have the same serial number.
Police found Cheney carrying a small bag of marijuana, and he and Young were arrested and charged with Class 3 felony forgery, police said. Cheney was also misdemeanor marijuana possession.
No information has been released about who is suspected of selling the young men marijuana in exchange for photocopied bills.
Cheney and Young are being held in the McHenry County Jail on $10,000 bonds.
