Teenager Dies After Being Shot By Police In Chatham
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 16-year-old boy died Monday after allegedly pointing a gun and firing at police officers, one of whom shot him Sunday night in the South Side Chatham neighborhood.
Ricky Childs, 16, of the 7900 block of South Ingleside Avenue, was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 11:51 p.m. Monday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The shooting happened about 11:15 p.m. Sunday in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said at the time.
Patrolling officers were flagged down by a victim of an armed robbery, police said. When the officers saw and approached a male matching the description of the robber, the suspect fled on foot.
After being chased into a gangway, the suspect fired shots at officers, police said. The suspect again turned and fired at officers as the chase continued, and an officer shot him.
No officers were injured and a weapon was recovered, police said.
Pat Camden, spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, said a man approached officers, pointing out a suspect he claimed robbed him. When officers tried to question the suspect, he ran.
While officers — one in a police cruiser, the other on foot — chased him, he exchanged gunfire with officers before running down a gangway, Camden said. As police closed in, he turned and pointed a gun at an officer, who shot him, Camden said.
A gun and ski mask were recovered, Camden said.
