Teen Shot And Killed In Marquette Park
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 16-year-old boy died after he was shot in the head Saturday night in the Marquette Park neighborhood.
The boy was standing with a group of people on a porch in the 6100 block of South Rockwell Street when shots were fired from a gray vehicle about 8 p.m., the statement said, adding that the shooting might be gang-related.
Police News Affairs originally said the boy died after the shooting before later listing him in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Joseph Briggs, 16, of the 6100 block of South Rockwell Street, was later pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The boy was sitting on his front porch at the time of the shooting, according to the medical examiner's office.
Police recovered shell casings and a weapon found near the porch, according to unconfirmed dispatch reports.
The drive-by shooting took place about half a mile away from a gang-related shooting that wounded another teenager in the Marquette Park neighborhood.
At about 2:36 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg in the 2500 block of West 63rd Street, said police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien.
Paramedics took the boy to Mount Sinai Hospital in "stable" condition, O'Brien said.
A police source said early reports indicated the shooting stemmed from an "internal gang conflict."
Area Central detectives are investigating the shootings.
