Teen Killed, Another Wounded In Kenwood Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago police were looking for the person who shot two teenagers in a Kenwood neighborhood alley early Sunday, one fatally, just blocks from President Barack Obama's home.
Police said the two teens were walking in an alley near 47th Street and Ellis Avenue around 12:50 a.m. when someone in a red minivan pulled up and opened fire.
Amy Curiengton and her family heard the commotion, but decided to stay indoors.
"I didn't get out the bed. I was like, 'those are probably gunshots,' and I was really scared. I was like 'We're just going to sit here, because I don't want anything to happen,'" she said.
Loretta Love was walking nearby at the time.
"As I was coming through, I heard boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. I'm like, 'Wow!' so I ducked," she said.
One boy, thought to be 15 or 16 years old, was shot in the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other boy, 16 years old, was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg.
"It's too close to home, and it's too many of these events happening," neighbor Cherry Hardie said.
Neighbors said they did not recognize the victims, and don't believe the boys live in the area. Regardless, they said they're now concerned for their safety.
"That could've been my friends. I don't want that to happen. I don't want my friends to die," Curiengton said.
Area Central detectives were investigating. No one was in custody Sunday afternoon.
