Teen Indicted For DUI, Reckless Homicide In Crash That Killed 5-Year-Old
WAUKEGAN, Ill. (CBS) -- The young woman accused of running over and killing a 5-year-old girl in Highland Park on Labor Day has been indicted for reckless homicide and driving under the influence.
Carly Rousso, 18, was accused of huffing computer cleaning spray before she ran down a family of four in her father's Lexus in downtown Highland Park on Sept. 3.
A container of the cleaning product was found in Rousso's car, prosecutors said last month after she was first charged with reckless homicide and four counts of aggravated driving under the influence. At the time, she was freed on $500,000 bond.
On Wednesday, a grand jury returned an indictment on two counts of reckless homicide, and four counts of aggravated driving under the influence, according to the Lake County State's Attorney's office. She has been scheduled for arraignment on Oct. 18.
Rousso is due back in court Oct. 5.
Jaclyn Santos Sacramento, 5, was killed after the car Rousso was driving crossed several lanes of traffic and onto the sidewalk on Labor Day, slamming into the child and her family. Rousso is also charged with causing injuries suffered by Jaclyn's mother, Modesta, and two brothers.
The accident happened in the 700 block of Central Avenue in Highland Park.
Jaclyn's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Rousso, accusing her of running over Jaclyn more than once, potentially backing over her in an attempt to flee.
After filing the suit last month, family attorney Bob Baizer said a local high school student interceded after Rousso struck Jaclyn and her family, and forcibly removed the keys from the ignition.
"It was completely instinctual and heroic," Baizer said at the time.
