15-Year-Old Girl Shot And Killed In Calumet City
CALUMET CITY, Ill. (CBS) -- A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed when someone shot through the window of a home in Calumet City on Sunday.
Hammond Teen Shot, Killed
Calumet City Police Chief Edward Gilmore said Ashaya Miller, of Hammond, Ind., was visiting friends or relatives at a home in the 500 block of Ingraham Avenue, when someone shot through a kitchen window.
Miller was shot twice in the back. A man inside the home was shot in the elbow.
Gilmore said police don't know who the intended target was.
"There's an elevated window that looks into the kitchen in the gangway. We're not sure whether the person was able to see into it, or raised the gun above their head and just fired into the house," he said.
Ashaya Miller's greatest wish was to be a fashion designer and make her family proud.
"You give her a piece of paper and anything to stencil with and she'll make it happen. She'll make it happen," said Darrell Williams, the victim's stepfather. "This was just senseless, this type of stuff. No child deserves this, no child."
Miller was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Police said no one was in custody for the shooting as of Monday morning.
