Teen Charged With Bringing Gun To Water Tower Place
CHICAGO (CBS) -- An Uptown teen has been charged with two felonies after getting caught with a loaded gun at Water Tower Place.
Dimitri Stephen, 19, of the 4500 block of North Clarendon Avenue, is charged with two felonies — unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the incident, police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti said.
Near North District Sgt. Kenneth Angarone is being credited with a quick-thinking move that led to Stephen's capture. While deploying officers on foot patrol along Michigan Avenue around 6 p.m. Monday, Angarone noticed a large group of teens leaving Water Tower Place, police said.
The area around the Magnificent Mile is near the site of several recent mob attacks and robberies that have left people seriously injured, and more recently, a mob theft from a Walgreens drugstore that involved some 50 young people.
Aware of the incidents, Angarone approached the group, at which point Stephen threw the gun away and started to run off, police said.
Officers quickly caught Stephen, and the loaded handgun was recovered, police said.
Bond for Stephen was later set at at $25,000, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 5 in North Felony Court (Br. 42), according to the Cook County sheriff's office.
