Teen Charged After Firing Revolver At Police

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A West Side teenager accused of exchanging gunfire with Chicago Police last month was formally charged with attempted murder on Wednesday.

Alante Hands, 17, of the 4700 block of West Maypole Avenue was charged with one count of attempted murder and two counts of attempted armed robbery, according to police.

Hands was indicted on Wednesday and arraignment was set for April 26, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said. On March 10, Hands was ordered held on $500,000 bond.

The incident happened about 8:40 p.m. on March 8 in the 4100 block of West Maypole, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.

Officers were patrolling the "high crime" area when they saw a man on foot armed with a revolver. "When they approached, the offender opened fire and they (the officers) returned fire,'' Gaines said.

The suspect got into a vehicle being driven by a second suspect and tried to drive away. Police caught up and they were arrested but the 21-year-old driver was later released without being charged.

Gaines said no one was hurt during the incident.

The revolver was recovered and police have the vehicle, according to police.
