Teen Accused Of Ramming Crystal Lake Police Car
CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (CBS) -- A 17-year-old boy faces multiple felony charges, after he allegedly rammed a Crystal Lake police cruiser head-on with a stolen sport-utility vehicle last week.
Jakob D. Nelson, of the 23500 block of North Cottage Road in Lake Zurich, was charged with one count each of possessing a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated battery, and aggravated fleeing and eluding, and one count of criminal damage to government-supported property, Crystal Lake police said.
At 4:39 a.m. on Dec. 1, Crystal Lake police tried to pull over a a black 1998 Ford Explorer because it was traveling about 60 mph in a 30 mph zone, according to a release from police.
The driver did not stop, and officers followed the SUV east on Route 176 and then north on Terra Cotta Road before it entered a residential subdivision, according to the release. While on Glenbrook Road, the SUV entered a cul-de-sac where the officer stopped his cruiser, but the SUV rammed the marked cruiser head-on, according to the release.
The SUV and cruiser were both left undrivable following the collision. The officer suffered only minor injuries, and the suspect fled on foot.
A subsequent investigation found the Explorer was stolen out of Lake County and the suspect was identified as Nelson.
Nelson turned himself in to Crystal Lake police on Thursday and was being held in the McHenry County Correctional Facility on $60,000 bond. His next court date is Dec. 14 in Woodstock.
