Teams Set To Compete To Pull Cargo Planes Along O'Hare Tarmac

CHICAGO (CBS) -- They'll be huffing and puffing in the cargo area at O'Hare International Airport Saturday, as more than three dozen teams try to see which one can pull a cargo jet faster than the other.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, teams of 20 people each will try to pull a UPS cargo plane 12 feet, and the fastest team to do that wins a trophy.

Of course, the real winners are Special Olympians, as the fourth annual event is designed to raise money for the Special Olympics.

Joe Pena ran the event a couple of years ago.

"I want to say it was last year, we had the roller derby that sent the team out, and their team of 20 really couldn't get the plane going, so a bunch of other people went out and helped them pull it, and even some of our athletes were involved in that," Pena said.

The winning team last year was from the Chicago Police Department, pulling the 180,000-pound plane 12 feet in 7.31 seconds.
