Teacher's Aide Accused Of Sex With Student
UPDATED 03/04/11 3:09 p.m.
NAPERVILLE, Ill. (CBS) -- A 58-year-old teacher's aide from Naperville has been arrested for an alleged sexual relationship with a male student.
Deborah Cox, of the 200 block of Scots Drive in Naperville, was a teacher's aide at Indian Prairie School District No. 204. She had been the personal academic tutor to a student at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville for several years, Naperville police said.
The relationship between Cox and the boy became sexual in January 2010 and continued until May of that year, police said.
Police received a complaint about the relationship this past August, by which time the student had graduated.
Naperville Police Sgt. Gregg Bell confirmed that the victim was a boy, but police have not specified the age of the student at the time of the incidents. Further details about the relationship also have not been specified.
Cox was charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse on Thursday, and her bond was set at $50,000 in Will County court.
Police do not believe that Cox was sexually involved with any other students, or that any of the alleged sex acts took place at the school.
Cox is set to appear for another court hearing on April 4.
A statement issued Friday morning by District 204 Supt. Kathy Birkett said Cox was hired in 2001 and passed a routine background check conducted before any new employees join the staff.
Counselors and social workers are available to support students who want to discuss this issue. Students with information that may help the investigation should contact police, the statement said.
