Tanker Truck Crash And Fire Closes Indiana Toll Road
LAKE STATION, Ind. (STMW) -- The westbound Indiana Toll Road is closed "indefinitely" near the Porter/Lake County Line after two trucks collided on the highway, causing an explosion and fire.
The accident occurred about 10:45 a.m. on the Toll Road near where it passes over Ripley Street in Lake Station, the Post-Tribune is reporting.
One truck's cab caught fire as a result of the crash and the driver of that vehicle suffered injuries to his leg and upper arm, ISP Sgt. Jeff Dolson said. A Toll Road spokesman tweeted that the explosion involved the tires and fuel tank on the cab, and not the tanker, which was carrying kitchen salt.
Westbound traffic is being diverted off the Toll Road at Mile Marker 23 (Willow Creek Road in Portage), and was detoured onto I-94. The westbound Portage Travel Plaza is also closed, according to Toll Road officials.
Neither truck's load was affected, Sgt. Dolson said.
