Tanaka Leads Yankees Past Cubs, 3-0
The Cubs got a first-hand look Wednesday afternoon what they missed out on in the Masahiro Tanaka sweepstakes.
A free agent target of the Cubs and many other teams this past offseason before choosing New York, Tanaka pitched eight innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits while striking out 10, to lead the Yankees to a 3-0 win against Chicago at Yankee Stadium in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
Tanaka was dominant all day, as the only two hits he allowed were bunt singles -- by Junior Lake in the second inning and Anthony Rizzo in the seventh.
Carlos Beltran hit a solo homer for the Yankees in the first inning, and that's all they would need. Jason Hammel pitched well in defeat for the Cubs, going seven innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on five hits and three walks.
Chicago fell to 4-9 with the loss, while New York improved to 8-6.
