Sweep Nets 48 Arrests Of Deadbeat Parents

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cook County Sheriff's police have arrested nearly 50 people for failing to pay child support in a weeklong sweep of delinquent parents in Cook County.

Starting Oct. 12, officers with the Sheriff's Child Support Enforcement unit tracked down 48 parents with outstanding warrants for failure to pay child support, according to the sheriff's office. Those parents owed more than $475,000 in total, police said Wednesday.

Reginald Halford, 49, of the 1800 block of South 50th Street in Chicago, owed the most in unpaid child support, at $41.488.55.

Charlene Love, 34, of the 2700 block of East 83rd Street, owed $38,921 in child support.

In all, 18 of the 48 people arrested owed more than $10,000 in child support, police said.

"Many of these cases involve a single parent struggling to make ends meet and provide a decent life for their children," Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said in a written statement. "The men and women we arrested are failing in one of the most important aspects of life – taking care of your own child."

The sheriff's office is continuing to investigate other deadbeat parents across Cook County. Anyone with information about a deadbeat parent should call 1-800-447-4278.
