SWAT Team Called After Naperville Man And Roommate Have Drunken Fight Downstate
CHAMPAIGN (CBS)-- A SWAT team was needed after a drunken fight between roommates escalated when one man fired a gun at the other in downstate Champaign early Sunday.
Police officers responded at 1:38 a.m. to a report of an armed man who had just fired at his roommate in the 100 block of East John Street, according to a release from Champaign police.
David Lu, 22, returned home from a bar and began physically fighting with his roommate, Champaign police said. During the fight, someone pulled a knife and a single shot was fired at Lu through his bedroom door.
Lu escaped the apartment unharmed and flagged down a passerby who contacted police. Officers were told that the armed man may still be inside the apartment.
The SWAT team was called and the apartment building as well as a nearby building was evacuated, Champaign police said. Warming buses were also at the scene for the evacuated residents who were unharmed.
After repeatedly attempting to enter Lu's apartment, police used a robot to find Lu's roommate, Daniel Chang, who was sleeping. A male and a female, who were not involved in the fight, were also found sleeping inside the apartment. A gun and knife were also found in the apartment.
Chang, 22, of the 1400 block of Stonegate Road in Naperville, was arrested for unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated discharge of a firearm, Champaign police said.
While police were interviewing Lu in the back seat of the police squad car, he became agitated, the statement said. Lu, who was believed to be intoxicated, began ripping up the flooring and seating parts of the vehicle. Lu was arrested for criminal damage to property.
It is believed that alcohol use by both parties involved may have contributed to the incidents, the statement said.
Chang and Lu are being held at the Champaign County Jail. Both are expected in court on Monday.
