Suspicious Package At West Loop Mariano's Deemed Safe
CHICAGO (CBS) -- It was better safe than sorry at the Mariano's grocery store in the West Loop on Thursday, when emergency crews responded to a report of a suspicious package.
WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports a Chicago Fire Department hazardous materials team and the Chicago Police Bomb and Arson Section were called to the Mariano's at 40 S. Halsted St. shortly before 9 a.m.
Owner Bob Mariano said his employees in the Vero café area noticed a suspicious bag and called 911.
"Two and two came to five, and they thought, 'Well, maybe this is something,' and so they did the right thing," he said.
Mariano said it turned out there was nothing dangerous in the bag, just denatured alcohol and slip-resistant grit for steps.
Since there was no work going on in the store that would require such materials, Mariano said he would look into how the bag got there.
